History of KAWTHAR Islamic English Language Center

 

KAWTHAR began its initiative in 1379 (2000) with the following purposes:

            Revising Educational English Books taught at different institutes

            Tracking qualified teachers in theology and Islamic creed

            Tracking qualified and dedicated female English Teachers

            Training qualified teachers in both English and theological fields

            Inserting and embedding Islamic capacities in English discourses

            Managing a thousand (1000) people/hours to investigate about Islamic themes in English

            Locating useful Islamic books in English

            Compiling Islamic Books and Pamphlets in English

            Dedicating 200 people/hours to consulting with qualified English-Speaking Scholars in Islam

 

Activities

            The institute first started its activity in 1384 (2005) at ‘The Quran and Itrah Student Center

            The institute was fully recognized in 1388 (2009) at The Student-based Hawza

            Organizing speeches and seminars in English

            Inviting new converts and successful individuals in tabliq and informing the students about their

 

experiences

            Hiring some of the institute’s students in The Conference on Women & Islamic Awakening’ as a translator

            Participation in a symposium on Women Studies as translators

            Giving out presentations about The situation of women in Iran in a Symposium by the institutes’ instructors

            Some of the instructors at the institute teach about Islamic themes in English at The Elmi-Karbordi University (University of Operative Academia)

            Cooperating with students who intend to teach/work at mosques, schools at cultural centers

            Recruiting and employing a number of the students in ‘Saliheen gatherings’ in mosques

            Conducting and organizing some of the students’ activities in the cyberspace

 

Objectives

1-         Educating and training devoted and professional individuals who are acquainted with Islamic discourses and English

2-         Proving a suitable and safe atmosphere that does not propagate western values in terms of educational content and form

3-         As the majority of English Institutes in Iran lack a proper balance between Islamic values and the educational material that is taught, the institute intends to prevent devoted and committed students to Islam from getting behind learning English and Islamic discourses in English.

4-         Intending to spread The Shi’i system of thought on a global level to enhance the status of Islam

5-         Distributing young, devoted researchers with sufficient proficiency among institutions and organizations who are directly or indirectly in need of qualified English-speaking scholars in Islam

6-         Directing  English Institutes towards local/national and Islamic needs

7-         Inspiring English Language Students in universities

8-         Educating teenage and young girls

 

Duties

1-         Training devoted and professional English-Speaking scholars who are acquainted with Islamic discourses

2-         Providing necessary facilities for objectives to be fulfilled

3-         Constant cooperation with organizations and  institutions who are directly or indirectly in need of proficient English-Speaking scholars in Islam (whether universities, The Hajj and Ziarah Organization, Cultural Centers, The Islamic Center for Publicizing Islamic Values, The Assembly for Approximating religions, The Global Ahlul-bayt Assembly, Hawza center and foreigners, etc.

 

Duties of the Board Members

1-         Interviewing and choosing instructors in English and Islamic discourses

2-         Interviewing and admitting students to the program

3-         Compiling and composing the sources for every course

4-         Organizing the bylaw of the institute

5-         Incorporating useful cultural, educational and research proposals for accomplishing the institute’s objectives

6-         Coordinating a public/professional meeting for students who sign up

 

Teaching Method

The Courses in The Institute are classified in two different topics, Islam and General English, and taught on four levels: Basic, Elementary, Intermediate and Advance. Also, for the convenience of the students, every level is also broken down into smaller levels (i.e. Basic 1, Basic 2…Elementary 1, Elementary 2…) so that students will have the opportunity to build up on their English and Islamic knowledge in a gradual manner.

 

Every semester, half of the time is dedicated to teaching general English and the other half is given to effective teaching of various topics in Islam in English.

The Islamic-Oriented English Program lasts for three years. The time-curriculum of the classes is four hours a week. Two hours for General English and two hours for Islam in English. Every semester lasts for six (6) weeks, a total of 24 hours.

 

The Islamic themes in English are taught in 5 different categories respectively:

1-         Introductory courses on basic Islamic themes

2-         Courses on The Life and manner of The Ahlul-bayt

3-         Courses on translating and interpreting The Quran in English

4-         Courses on Confirming the Authority and Wilayah of Imam Ali (as)

5-         Courses on Islamic Creed/Beliefs

 

Sources:

1-         Kawthar Islamic English books which are specifically designed in this institute (3 books for the Basic level)

2-         Kawthar Islamic English books (3 books for the Elementary level)

3-         Islam, Faith, Practice & History and other sources that the instructor introduces to students (For the Pre-Intermediate and Upper-Intermediate level)

4-         Then I was guided (For Intermediate level)

5-         Pamphlets and articles that are given to students every session as extra-curriculum activities
